Locals introduce beef sticks to market and
work to preserve Pineywoods Cattle breed

   The Wells Family of Marion County – husband and wife Jay & Faye along with sons Bryan & A.J. – has combined a love of an old breed of cattle with a new business – Georgia Native Cattle Company.
   They recently released a line of beef sticks from their growing herd of Pineywoods cattle.
   "These cattle are native to our area, originally brought into the area by the Spanish in the early 1500s," said Jay Wells. "They are a little bit smaller, hardier, and have adapted to the heat and specifics of our South Georgia ecosystem."
   They started raising the cattle 13 years ago, because they wanted to participate in the preservation of heritage cattle important to the history of Georgia agriculture. In the years that followed, their herd grew from a couple dozen to around 300.
