Marion trounces Turner Co. 30-0 in state playoffs

Marion County High advanced to the “Elite 8” round of the state playoffs by trouncing the Turner County Rebels 30-0 last Friday in front of a large crowd in Eagle Stadium. The No. 2 ranked Eagles (10-1) are now two wins away from the state title game and will host Dooly County this Friday.
Turner County entered the game averaging 33.4 points per game (46.5 in their last 4 games), but the Eagles’ defense didn’t allow them a single point. Their first half possessions ended as follows: fumble at midfield, punt from own 26, punt from own 21, punt from own 41, punt from own 20.
In addition to the excellent defensive play, All-American A.J. Wells’ kickoffs for touchbacks and long punts also played a role in keeping the Rebels a long way from the endzone.
“Our defense had a very good night,” said Head Coach Mike Swaney. “They had been scoring a lot of points, so I was real pleased at how we shut them down.”
