The Marion County defense and kicker/punter A.J. Wells kept the team in the game early, and the offense got on track later to allow the No. 7 ranked Eagles to cruise to a big 31-12 win over No. 10 ranked Charlton County last Friday in the first round of the state playoffs. Despite the game being played on a holiday weekend, a big crowd enjoyed cheering the team to its first playoff victory in the new stadium.
The Eagles (9-2) advanced to the quarterfinals with the win (see separate article for details).
“Our defense had its best game of the year against a high-powered, no huddle offense,” said Head Coach Mike Swaney.
The defense stopped Charlton on fourth down three times and also forced three turnovers – two interceptions that stopped drives deep inside Eagle territory and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
“Brandon Green scoring on that fumble recovery (that put the Eagles up 17-6 in the third quarter) was a huge turning point,” Coach Swaney said. “That was probably the biggest play of the game.”
