The Marion County Board of Education voted to accept a settlement offer of $1,149,307 from Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, discussed expanding the cafeteria at the elementary school, and conducted various other items of business during its regular monthly meeting Monday evening.
The insurance settlement is for the former middle school building on Burkhalter Avenue. Much of the historic school building and its contents were destroyed last June when a car crashed into the building and caused a massive fire.
Superintendent Richard McCorkle noted that the initial offer was around $800,000, but school system employees worked diligently to make sure the insurance claim included everything that was destroyed or damaged.
