gets grant and dedicates historic marker

In the thirty odd years that Tom and Carita Mathews lived in Schley County, after retiring from a career in the Air Force, they made quite an impact on the community.
Carita Mathews died on June 21, 2013 at age 84. A few years ago she and Tom moved to live with her daughter and son-in-law, David and Kay Marti, in Jacksonville. Tom passed away after the move, and Carita kept busy until just a few weeks ago.
When the Mathews were planning to retire from the Air Force, Carita came to look at a parcel of 37 acres on US 19 just south of Ellaville and bought it outright. The couple lived in a mobile home while building their home, detached garage, and later a tennis court, by themselves. Carita attended trade school to learn ...
