As a longtime coroner, undertaker, and ambulance driver, Herbert Tante has seen a lot, but in 2013 he discovered something new. He discovered what it is like to not be on call 24 hours a day/7 days a week. January 1 marked the first day in 16,060 days that he has not had to be ready to drop whatever he was doing and rush to work.
New Years Eve was the first time in 44 years I was able to go to bed without wondering if Id have to get up in the middle of the night, he said.
It is taking some time to get used to it, but the more days roll by, the more he enjoys retirement.
