The 2012 Marion County High School Softball Team
Eagles' experience and big bats give them
hope for a winning season and playoffs

The Marion County High School varsity softball team has an experienced squad and is looking to show improvement while competing for the Region 4A title and capturing a state playoff spot.
Last year the Eagles had a very young team (only one senior and started four sophomores and two freshmen most of the year). As expected, there were some “growing pains” and team finished the year 9-12, but all of that experience should begin to pay off this year.
Including the DP spot (softball’s version of the designated hitter), the Eagles have nine returning starters: Taylor Hendrix,, Hanna Wodzinski, Kinsley Prevatt, Carly Davis, Jenna Sizemore, K.C. Ledford, Harlie Reddoch, Shenika Stevens, and Miranda McCarter.
In addition to experience, Head Coach Monty Howard thinks hitting will be a strength of this year’s team.
“We have a lot of strong hitters and I believe we will put up lots of runs this year. We also have some great clutch hitters, so I believe we will be able to pull out close games.”
While the Eagles can hit from the top to the bottom of the order, players expected to be among the team’s best hitters include leadoff batter Harlie Reddoch, who combines her good bat with a lot of speed, Jenna Sizemore, Christina Davis, who has “tons of power and potential”, and Kinsley Prevatt, who leads the team in extra base hits so far this season.
“We have a lot of good hitters, so really any starter could wind up being our leading hitter,” said Coach Howard.
Freshman Christina Davis will join veteran Taylor Hendrix (junior) in the pitcher’s circle this year. They will both likely log a lot of innings and their performance – and the support they get from the fielders behind them – will be big factors in how the season goes.
“We can’t afford to walk many batters this year,” Coach Howard said. “We have to throw strikes and trust our defense. Obviously the left side of the infield has to step up big time. I expect a lot of balls to be hit to third and short.”
Howard also said that the team needs to have a good attitude and be able to “dust ourselves off” when things don’t go well.
“When we make mistakes or have a bad inning, we have to keep our heads up ‘play in the present’ and play as a team,” he said.
The Eagles will face some tough competition in Region 4A. There are at least five quality teams in the region this season and with the new playoff system, only the region champ is guaranteed a playoff spot. Those who don’t win the region title will be ranked in a new “Power Ranking System” and the top 16 public schools will make the playoffs to compete for the state champion (just as the top 16 private schools will compete for the private school championship).
Brookstone won the region last year and has basically the same team this year. Pacelli has one of the best pitchers in the state. Brookstone and Pacelli will both likely make the state playoffs on the private school side.
Schley County, Hawkinsville, and Marion County all figure to compete for spots in the public school playoffs.
Members of this year’s team are:
* Carly Davis, senior, second base, #11
* K.C. Ledford, senior, third base/utility, #22
* Jenna Sizemore, senior, shortstop, #5
* Sunni McAllister, senior, outfield, #27
* Taylor Hendrix, junior, pitcher/catcher/outfield, #12
* Miranda McCarter, junior, outfield/catcher, #3
* Kinsley Prevatt, junior, first base, #10

Coaches: Head Coach Monty Howard will be assisted by Whitney Knight and (middle school coaches) Chrissy O’Neal and Jill Peacock.
