Looking for a challenging cross-country 5K or 10K (or just a nice, relaxing walk through some beautiful farmland), all while helping support a respected local Christian charity? Then sign up for the Buena Vista Off-Road Challenge, which will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 4.
The routes for the 5K and 10K wind through woods and pastures of the Wells/Brown farmland five miles south of Buena Vista on Highway 41.
, it is a rare chance to run a challenging off-road course with a few small streams to skip across, as well as an opportunity to take on a section of the course that practice runners have dubbed Cardiac Hill.
, it is a chance to switch your scenery from sidewalks to the sites of nature, including plenty of areas that cut through the woods and provide some nice shade.
, it isa chance to help No Tears for Christma
s, which will be the sole beneficiary of the proceeds. This is a program run by local resident Alex Hadley through her nonprofit Fifth Avenue Bargain Sho” in Buena Vista. Hadley and fellow volunteers help needy local residents in a variety of ways all year long, but their signature program is No Tears for Christmas, which provides toys to children of local needy families.
Frank and Julie (Wells) Brown, owners of Odyssey Printing & Graphics in Columbus, are two of the primary sponsors and are organizing and hosting the event along with Jeff Gordy of Arnold Bike Shop in Columbus.
We hosted a 5K several years ago on the farm and a lot of the people who participated have been encouraging us to do another one ever since, said Mr. Brown. We have some great co-sponsors for this one and we are very happy that they all want to help raise money for No Tears for Christmas. We really want this to be a big fundraiser for Alex and we are hoping the community and residents in surrounding counties will come out and be a part of it. It’s going to be a lot of fun and we don’t think anyone will leave disappointed.
The registration fee is $25 per participant (register early to be guaranteed a free commemorative shirt). Registration forms are available from the following sponsors: The Journal in Buena Vista (dial 229-649-6397 or request an entry form via email, email@example.com
), Arnolds Bike Shop in Columbus, and Odyssey Printing in Columbus. You may also contact Frank Brown at 229-649-6515 or 706-326-3531.
The Kiwanis Club of North Columbus is also a major sponsor.
Awards will be presented to the top finishers in various age groups.
In addition to the run/walk at 9 a.m., participants are encouraged to bring their bicycles (off-road, mountain bike style) and enjoy the course after the official event.
