Webster imposes moratorium
on older mobile homes

In an initial step towards imposing permanent restrictions, the Webster County Commission has implemented a temporary moratorium that prohibits anyone from bringing into or moving within the county, any mobile home that is older than a 1997 model.
According to Commission Chairman Dave Wills, the moratorium became effective on August 15, when the measure was voted on, and will continue in effect through October 15. During the interim, commissioners will gather and study ordinances from adjoining counties which have already taken measures to prevent old and dilapidated mobile homes from being brought into the counties.
"Our intention is to adopt reasonable standards that protect property values and add to, rather than detract from, the community," said Wills.
In other business, commissioners:
* Discussed matters related to the Board of Elections and Registration;
* Approved a contract with Government Tax Services to collect certain fees due the county;
* Decided to study the matter of requiring licenses and issuing the same for businesses in the unincorporated county;
* Approved a request to place a decorative bench on the courthouse lawn honoring Newell Wilson;
* Approved the purchase of a laptop computer;
* Approved the purchase of a hydraulic stretcher for EMS, one-half of the cost of which is being paid for with a $5,000 grant from Sumter EMC's Operation Roundup contributions;
* Approved the submission of eight roads to the Georgia Department of Transportation for possible inclusion in the Local Assistance Road Program which pays for resurfacing roads;
* Refused to approve a request to pay for increased costs related to a subcontract on the renovation of the former elementary school;
* Approved a resolution in support of After-School programs;
* And discussed and revised the proposed budget.
