DA won't press charges
related to keg party

(From the July 21, 2006 issue) The Southwestern Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office recently announced the completion of an investigation into an alleged underage keg party in Webster County and determined the claims made by the person who requested the investigation to be greatly exaggerated. The district attorney described the allegations as appearing to be an effort to discredit an ex-husband and his girlfriend’s family.
The investigation was requested by Amy Jones, who alleged that there was a party at her ex-husband’s residence and that a large number of teenagers were allowed to drink beer from a keg after paying $5 each. She also alleged that the keg was purchased by adults who then attempted to cover up the purchase.
However, after interviewing Jones as well as individuals who attended the party, the district attorney came to a much different conclusion and there will be no prosecution.
Below are six statements about the complaint and investigation from the district attorney.
   1. There was a party at the residence of Chris Jones on April 29, 2006. A keg of beer was located at the residence. There were people over 21 and under 21 at the party.
   2. No one at the party or planning the party offered, sold, obtained for or otherwise provided beer to or for anyone underage.
   3. There were four underage people who were seen drinking a small quantity of beer and obtaining it for themselves. They denied anyone at the party got it for them, encouraged them to drink or even saw them get the beer.
   4. Therefore, the only people who committed a crime were the four juveniles who drank.
   5. As they and their family have been put up to public ridicule by Ms. Jones’ allegations, we feel certain they have learned their lesson and no further action is in the interests of these juveniles or justice.
   6. It should be noted, that the investigation has also revealed that the complainant in this matter, Amy Jones, is the ex-wife of Chris Jones. As it appears, the allegations made were blown completely out of proportion in some instances and pure gossip in others. It appears that this complaint was nothing more than an effort to discredit him and the family of his current girlfriend.
