Preston officials discussed the topics of reducing the speed limit, giving employees a raise, and various other items during the recent monthly meeting of the Town Council.
Preston is talking to the Georgia Department of Transportation about the possibility of reducing the speed limit inside the city limits. Mayor Marie Hunter noted that Sheriff’s Deputy Bankston said the speed limit should be 45 mph further outside the city, then be reduced to 35, then drop down to 30 further inside the city. It was also noted that two nearby cities – Richland and Plains – have 30 mph zones.
Council members also approved a three percent cost-of-living increase for employees, which applies to full-time workers, as well as part-time employees with more than two years of employment with the city. The council members, however, voted to not include themselves in the increase.
Officials also heard a report from Animal Control Officer Danny Singleton, who works for the City of Buena Vista, but recently started to work with Preston some, too. He reported that he has captured six dogs (two had mange and one was an injured pit bull). None of the dogs were wearing collars and most appeared to be wild rather than being pets. He also captured eight cats, a fox, and a possum.
Three “problem dogs” (all chow breeds) were also discussed during the meeting. |
