Webster County forms chapter of Habitat for Humanity |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| What do a Baptist minister, a Methodist minister, a real estate property manager, a beauty shop owner and a Webster County Emergency Services officer have in common? A lot more than you would think. They all live and/or work in Webster County, have a keen interest in helping low income families living in Webster County in need of decent housing find a better place to live, and now they're all part of the newly formed board of directors of the Webster County Chapter of New Horizons Habitat for Humanity. They and 10 other Webster County-based citizens have joined together to establish a local Habitat for Humanity Chapter. The public is invited to the ceremony the Board will hold this coming Saturday, January 6 at |

| 4:30 p.m. at the Webster County 4-H/Extension Office at 7235 Washington Street (Highway 41 South) in Preston to celebrate the chapter's formation. The Board consists of these 15 individuals: Daphane Williams, Darrell Holbrook, Desiree Gardner, Dianne Abercrombie, Donald Brown, Elaine C. Nealy, Floyd Brown, James E. Slaughter, John A. Strand, Raymond and Joy Marchbanks, Rev. Rendell Day, Rev. Rick Hamilton, Ronald Brown, and Stan Roberts. The 15 new Habitat Chapter Board members have each agreed to serve a two-year renewable term which can be extended for two additional terms for a total of six years. Their responsibilities will include selecting and mentoring local families in need of decent housing who want to be Habitat homeowners, finding land to build Habitat homes on and gathering the volunteers and financial donations needed to build Habitat homes in Webster County. The Board is off to a good start. To date they have accumulated over $2,000 in their building fund. Donations have come from as far as Iowa and as close as some local churches and their members. The Board hopes to start building their first house this summer. "That's what Habitat is about - building homes for families in need with the help from people who live in the community," says board president, Jim Slaughter. "We rely on the resources provided by willing volunteers who will be neighbors of the families in the program." Slaughter has a home in Preston and owns his own property management business. He is joined on the Board by Darrell Holbrook, who was elected chapter vice president and is head of Webster County's Emergency Services Department, and by Elaine Nealy who was elected Chapter secretary. The family selection committee members are Donald Brown, Dianne Abercrombie, Desiree Gardner, Darrel Holbrook, Elaine Nealy and Joy Marchbanks. The fundraising committee includes Board President Jim Slaughter as well as Floyd Brown, Ronald Brown, John Strand, Darrell Holbrook, Stan Roberts and Ray Marchbanks, who have all volunteered to work on the committee.
