Wildfire burns 30.79 acres

The Georgia Forestry Commission suppressed a wildfire on July 21, but not before it burned 30.79 acres off of Highway 271 in Schley County.
Chief Ranger Brent McCarty said the wildfire was started from lightning from a couple days earlier. McCarty points out that lightning causes some wildfires, but annually 49 percent of all wildfires in the state are caused by debris burning, so please be careful with any outdoor burning, especially during this dry period.
All residents of Georgia are urged to be careful with fire, and remember that anyone planning outdoor burning is required by law to obtain a burning permit from the Georgia Forestry Commission before setting a fire. The permit, to be issued only when weather conditions are favorable, may be obtained by calling the Schley-Sumter Forestry Unit at 229-931-2511, 1-877-OK2-BURN (1-877-652-2876) or visit our website at www.gatrees.org.
The Commission holds the best forest fire suppression record in the Southeast. Efficient tactics and dedicated professional firefighters have kept the average loss to less than five acres.
