Ruff travels to Botswana

By LINDA ADAMS
On the trip of a lifetime, Emily Ruff flew to the African continent to visit her great-niece, Rosalyn Waters. Waters works for the United States Embassy in Gaborone, Botswana. Botswana is a landlocked nation bordered on the south by South Africa. The economy is closely linked to South Africa, with the major industries being mining, tourism and cattle.

Botswana achieved independence in 1966.
Ruff traveled with three of her nieces. The husband of one of them also went on the journey. All are daughters of Ruff’s oldest sister, the late Ozell Alridge. Rosalyn Waters is Ruff’s great niece. She has worked with the United States Department of State for 18 years. She speaks 16 languages, and supervises 15 people at the Embassy in Gaborone. Waters is married to a Finn and they have a 7-year-old son.
The group flew from West Palm Beach, Florida to Newark, then to Paris, and then on to Johannesburg, South Africa. From South Africa they flew in a smaller plane to Botswana. They stayed in Botswana for 10 days. Their excursions included a trip to a diamond mine, a safari to see the animals of the savannas and a basket market.
“Botswana is a beautiful country,” Ruff said. “We really enjoyed our trip. The weather was like fall here, which was nice. My niece and her husband have a beautiful home and they made us feel at home.”
