Family Connection awards grants

By LINDA ADAMS
Now that Family Connection is established in Schley County, the community has access to Family Connection State Grant funds. As a part of a Georgia statewide initiative, the local collaborative partnership works to develop, implement and evaluate plans and programs that address the challenges facing our children and our families. Each county

collaborative is allotted a certain amount to fund the local program. At the end of the year groups are asked to apply for any funds that were not used. The collaborative unanimously agrees to use these funds in support of the collaborative partners to help enhance existing programs and to start new programs related to families and children in the community.
Five groups applied for and received grants. These included the Ellaville-Schley Recreation Authority, M.A.D.E., Schley County Fire Department, Schley County 4-H Club, and the Schley County High School Band Boosters.  Rachael Oliver, acting coordinator of Schley Family Connection, presented the grants to those attending the recent monthly meeting.
Each of these organizations will be featured in subsequent articles with the first one included in this piece.
Ellaville-Schley County Recreational Authority
The Ellaville-Schley County Recreational Authority received a grant of $4,000 through Schley County Family Connection. This grant will be added to the funds from the recently awarded Community Block Grant to build new ball fields. Plans approved last month will provide for the construction of four new playing fields. Three will be baseball/softball fields and the third will be an all-purpose field. The work to be done with this grant is now out to bid.
“We have just finished our baseball and softball season with over 200 kids participating,” Phil Howell said. “Some of these kids played on the all-star team. We look forward to having these new facilities, and this Family Connection Grant will help in the construction of these new fields. The Rec Authority appreciates this additional funding. I also want to thank all of the parents who contributed their time this year to serve as coaches and those who ran the concessions stand.”
The Ellaville-Schley Recreational Authority is chaired by Jody Dillard. The Vice Chair is Beth Pearce and the Secretary-Treasurer is Phil Howell.  Members of the Board are Ronnie King, Rodney Usry, and Angeli Smith. Jason Sanford is the director.
