By LINDA ADAMS
(From the April 11, 2007 issue)
There’s a woman who can be seen walking around Ellaville almost daily. She is noticeable because her steps are short and her pace is slow. Her name is Dawn McDaniel, and she survived a devastating automobile accident and the prognosis of life in a vegetative state.
McDaniel grew up in Taylor County. Her accident happened on October 18, 1990, when she was celebrating her 25th birthday. Her car hit an 18 wheeler, and she spent three months in a coma. Her parents were deceased and her aunt, Linda Poole of Ideal, was told that she would probably never walk, talk, or have any kind of a normal life. |

Poole was advised to place her in a nursing home. She awoke from her coma in Oak Nursing Home in Marshallville with no memory of her accident.
McDaniel credits the good Lord above for her recovery. She also gives a large measure of credit to her Aunt Linda. Another aunt, Ruby Theuss, was a big help, too. She took McDaniel to Warm Springs, where her therapy started. The therapy and rehabilitation process lasted a full 10 years.
“Most of my problems from the accident were a result of a head injury, but I had internal injuries as well,” McDaniel said. “I had to learn everything again, just as if I were a child starting life.”

McDaniel attends First Methodist Church and enjoys living in Ellaville. She says that the people are friendly and helpful. When asked why she walks so much about town she replied, “because I can.”
