Ellaville teenager accepts
'People to People' challenge

By LINDA ADAMS
(From the December 13, 2006 issue)
"People to People" was founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. He believed that ordinary citizens of different nations, if able to communicate directly, would solve their differences and find a way to live in peace, and that if people from different cultures could come together in peace and friendship, so eventually would nations. Celebrating 50 years of experience, the organization has received worldwide recognition for its efforts to promote peace through understanding. The People to People Student Ambassador Programs recently solicited applicants from Georgia.
Accepted into the program is Schley County teenager Lindsey Welch, daughter of Raymond and Kelli Welch.
Lindsey will not be a tourist, but an American ambassador. She will travel from Austria to France on a 20-day trip. She and her group of around 40 students will meet with government officials, interact with local students, engage in educational activities, and experience home stays with host families. She will be asking for financial sponsorship to help with tuition and travel costs.
The program grants high school and college credits because of the many educational elements included. Those contributing to her experience will make checks out to the People to People Ambassador Programs. The website of the program is: www.studentambassadors.org
A statement from the program: "Following President Eisenhower's vision, I traveled the path of those before me, to teach another culture a little about the youth of America. They taught me that we have our differences, but underneath lays a common thread. We care about our families, the environment, and the future. I have become part of the global family. I learned a deeper meaning of friendship, how to cope with my fears and take each new struggle in stride. This real world experience has shaped my character and given me the confidence to know I can succeed in life."
