Cobb County man faces surgeries
after hunting accident in Schley
By LINDA ADAMS
(From the November 29, 2006 issue)

This story starts many years ago when a hunter from Cobb County went into Wall's Café in Ellaville. The hunter struck up a friendship with a local who was having his breakfast there, as was his habit.
When he said he was leasing land to hunt, the local man offered some of his land to the hunter for the same purpose, and for free. The hunter was Ralph Iorio, and the local was the late Byron Hill.
Now, years later, Iorio is still hunting that land, but he suffered a fall from one of his hunting stands recently. He left a young friend, Travis, to "sleep in" at the cabin, and went out early in the morning to hunt. The stand was a high one, almost 25'. At some point his weight was on a branch of a tree which gave way. Iorio fell to the ground, breaking his collarbone, arm, wrist, a couple of ribs, and several processes on his spine.
Iorio had no means of calling Travis, but he did have his rifle. He fired three shots in succession, which woke Travis and alerted him of a problem.
The Schley County EMC arrived only to find that the ambulance couldn't get to the stand. The Voluntary Fire Department men were also notified and they used Alan Stewart's pick-up to transport Iorio through the woods to the ambulance. He was then airlifted to Columbus, and has since returned home. He is facing at least two possible surgeries in the hospitals in Cobb County.
Iorio has a daughter living in Schley County, Samantha Theus. Samantha is a dental hygienist with Dr. Duke in Americus and her husband, Steve, is a park ranger at Jimmy Carter's Boyhood home.
