(From the January 17, 2007 issue)
Tyler Anderson and his family were invited to Fort Benning last week when President George W. Bush visited the troops stationed there.  Along with other families who had lost someone in Iraq, Tyler’s family was given the opportunity to meet the President in person.
Just four family members went to the meeting: Ellen, Tyler’s mother, Tyler, and his grandparents, Belinda and Harrel Poole.  They were not allowed to let anyone know that they were going because the people at Fort Benning didn’t want a lot of news coverage.  They had to go through security clearance and were ushered into a room with about 80 people representing 25 families.  Refreshments were served, since they had to wait from one o’clock until

around 4:30 for the president to visit.  Then they were divided into three rooms.  Tyler and his family were in the last room visited and they were the last family the President spoke to.
“The President laughed, cried, and prayed with us,” Belinda Poole related.  “He was very friendly and very human.  I had him sign a Central Bank of Georgia check since I didn’t have anything else to get an autograph on.  He said it wasn’t a political visit but a personal one.  We felt at ease with him.”
The president asked Tyler if he played any sports, and when he answered that he played ‘hind catcher,’ Bush told Tyler that he played the same position when he was a boy.  Just before the president left, he told Tyler that if he ever needed anything, he should give him a call.  Tyler replied that there was something he needed – an excuse for being out of school for the day.  President Bush laughed and wrote out one for him.
The next morning Tyler dutifully gave the excuse to his principal, Melody Murray.  She is going to frame it and hang it in her office.
