| dispute apparently led to the shooting. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about the shooting, with Sheriff Snider and Deputy Darrell Neal soon reaching the scene, which was a location where the two men have adjoining property. Lane appeared to have been hit in the face, head, neck and shoulder areas. He was treated and transported to the Medical Center in Columbus by the Marion County EMS. Barrett was no longer present. The Sheriff’s Office contacted one of his nephews and told him that the family should have him turn himself in immediately. Barrett turned himself in at the Marion County Jail. He now faces nine criminal charges. The charges are: six counts of aggravated assault; two counts of cruelty to children; and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. The GBI is completing the investigation of the shooting. According to GBI Agent-In-Charge Jackson, the charges of cruelty to children stem from the fact that two of the victim’s grandchildren were present during the shooting. He also said the men were apparently around 40 yards apart when the shot was fired. Barrett is 66-years-old and Lane is 58-years-old. |
