Man pleads guilty to charges from
Marion's 1st big 'meth' bust

By RICHARD HARRIS
(From the Nov. 29, 2006 issue)
Marion County resident David Lane, who was arrested in the spring of 2005 in the county’s first big “crystal meth” bust, was sentenced to three years in prison and 15 years of probation after pleading guilty in Marion County Superior Court on Monday, Nov. 27.
David Lane pled guilty to one count of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and was sentenced to 10 years probation, three years in jail, and had his fourth amendment rights waived (meaning that he may be searched at any time). He also pled guilty to possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. For that crime, he was sentenced to 10 years probation (to be served concurrently with the above sentence). There was another guilty plea to possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, which netted a sentence of five years probation.
He had also been charged with possession of distilled spirits for which taxes were not paid, but that charge was dismissed.
While in court, David Lane also faced other charges from a more recent arrest. He was arrested on August 15 of this year and charged with making harassing phone calls and two counts of making terroristic threats. He pled guilty to the harassing phone calls and was sentenced to 12 months probation, which will be served concurrently with the drug charges sentence. The two counts of terroristic threats were dismissed.
Two other local residents – Eddie Lane and Mary Margaret Lane --

who were arrested in the 2005 drug bust had their charges placed on the court’s “dead docket,” which is short of an outright dismissal because the state could choose to bring them back before the court.
They had both been charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
All three of the Lanes had been arrested on March 7, 2005 when the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the Sumter County Multi-Agency Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at the home of David Lane at 2237 Georgia Highway 139 off of Dr. Deryl Hart Road.
In addition to the illegal drugs, numerous weapons and around 1,100 rounds of ammunition were seized from the home.
Anyone with information about illegal drug activity in the area is asked to contact the Marion County Sheriff’s Office at 649-3841.
