Buena Vista artist invites public
to monthly 'Gallery Hops'

By RICHARD HARRIS
(From the October 11, 2006 issue)
Local artist Helena Meek of Buena Vista invites the public to participate in a new and exciting series of “Second Saturday Gallery Hops” in which stops are made at various area art galleries or art-related locations.
By now many area residents are probably aware of at least some of the art produced by Meek in her local “Sunny Acres Gallery” on Highway 26 between Buena Vista and Ellaville, but she wants to help other artists with the “hops.”
“We have so many talented people right here in our area,” she said. “When I started painting I received encouragement from people that really helped me. I hope drawing attention to other artists will give them some encouragement, too.”

These gallery hops will be held on the second Saturday of each month, with the first one scheduled for this Saturday, Oct. 14. It will feature stops at a new Ellaville market that is a showcase for many area artists, as well as a trip to the art exhibit at the Georgia National Fair, and a stop at a turn-of-the-century farm house, whose owner also has artist talents.

The first stop on this Saturday’s hop is at 9:30 a.m. at The Planters Market in downtown Ellaville (28 East Church Street). The market features items from 23 dealers, ranging from art to antiques. The hop stop will also coincide with The Planters Market’s monthly “Second Saturday Sale,” which will feature discounted prices. For those who only want to enjoy visiting and browsing, there will also be refreshments and music by guitarist Lee Pilcher.
The second stop on the hop (approximately 11:30 a.m.) will be the Georgia National Fair in Perry (one hour drive from Ellaville). While at the fair, participants will view fine art displays from Joseph House Gallery artists, as well as work by artists from all over the state.
After leaving the fair, there will be a return stop in Ellaville at the turn-of-the-century farm house of Ken and Linda Adams. Mrs. Adams will have apple cider waiting for the group. While at the Adam’s home, visitors can also learn about her various art-related

skills, which include furniture painting, family portrait collages and interior design schemes. There is also the promise of a “special surprise.”
For more information about the first Second Saturday Gallery Hop or plans for future hops, call Helena Meek at 229-649-9030. Also, while she knows many talented artists, she is sure there are others out there in the surrounding counties that she’d like to discover – and perhaps help others discover, too, through a future gallery hop. So, she also welcomes calls from people who know an area artist, whether they be amateur or professional.
