The Chattahoochee County High School football team recorded its first ever varsity victory last Friday night by dominating Glascock County and winning by a score of 35-14.
“At times we were sharp and looked really good, but we’re still learning and growing as a team,” said Head Coach Josh Kemp. “Last year at the junior varsity level our games were shorter and I think our players are still getting mentally conditioned to play in these longer games. It’s a learning process.”
The Panthers set the tone very early, as junior Octavius Staton rambled 65 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. CCHS controlled the game from that point forward, leading 34-6 at halftime before using the second half as an opportunity for the younger reserves to pick up game-time experience.
Quarterback Caleb Horvath completed 8-of-13 passes for 148 yards and two touchdowns, while throwing no interceptions.
Staton ended up as the leading rusher (115 yards on just five carries), while freshman Niko Jones had 100 yards of total offense (running and receiving) and two touchdowns. His touchdown reception was a short pass that he turned into a big touchdown play by making numerous tacklers miss. Delandis Harris hauled in 60 yards as a receiver, including a touchdown. Jacovi White also rushed for a touchdown.
While the offense racked up yards and points, the defense shut down Glascock. The starting defensive unit (which played the first half and only the first series of the second half) gave up only around 75 yards.
Linebackers Derrick Johnson and Lester “DeDe” Jones led the defensive effort. Johnson had 11 tackles, while Jones had 10, including three for a loss and a sack. Jones has a whopping 40 tackles so far after the first three games.
Coach Kemp said he’s pleased with how the Panthers (now 1-2) are doing after three games, but their true potential as a team is still a question mark.
“At this point it’s still hard to tell just what we can do, but I’m not counting out the playoffs,” said Kemp. “That’s out goal – even if it’s an

The Panthers will play region foe Pacelli this Friday in Columbus. Pacelli lost its first two games to tough opponents (Bowdon – 7-20 and Manchester – 19-43), but defeated Landmark Christian (ranked in the top ten earlier this season) by a score of 22-21 last Friday.
“We play Pacelli next and they have a good team,” said Coach Kemp. “We’ll need to avoid mistakes and not turn the ball over. … How we play against Pacelli will be a great barometer to give us an idea of where we’re at as a football program.”
