Snips ‘N Bits of Information: Want to know what’s happening in the county? At our recent Chamber of Commerce meeting, the following information was provided:
   1. Planning & Zoning - Charlie Wright reported two public hearings were scheduled, one of which was postponed. Mr. Wright said he wished more people would attend and participate in the public hearings. Right now a Comprehensive Plan is still being worked on to formulate legislation to address the issue of impact fees. The Board is also working on a planned unit development ordinance that deals with higher density development and green space.
   2. Tax Assessors - Jim Lawrence reported the tax digest had been returned from the state with their approval. Our county was one of three in the state having their sales ratio at 40 percent, which means the values used to calculate property taxes are fair and equal.
   3. Board of Commissioners - Commissioner Larry Dillard reported the commissioners have approved the formation of a Municipal Police Department. Also a doctor from Southwest Georgia Medical has signed a contract to provide medical services in the county. The target date is September 1. A county manager will be appointed for a three-year term on July 11.
   4. Miscellaneous - A letter of intent has been sent to Hands on Georgia expressing the intent of the Garden Club and the Chamber of Commerce to participate with the schools in the Adopt-a-Mile program.
   5. More stuff: It was decided at the June Chamber meeting not to have a July meeting, but to attend the graduation ceremony and dinner for the Leadership Class which will be held at the Cunningham Institute in Columbus on July 25. For more information please contact David Jankowski at 706-989-3724. The next regular meeting will be August 14 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Neighborhood Service Center.
