Chattahoochee students spend spring break
helping others in Gulf Coast region

(From the May 24, 2006 issue)
Club Beyond, a military outreach ministry for teenagers on Ft. Benning, took two mission trips to Mississippi during this year's spring breaks. Mostly middle school students from Faith Middle School went the first week, and then all of the high school students were from Chattahoochee County High School the second week.
The high school students went to Gulfport and worked for Youth for Christ, a prominent youth outreach ministry there. They stayed for five days and worked in Pass Christian, Gulfport and Pascagoula.
Much of what they did was clean up houses that had been damaged during Hurricane Katrina. From floodwaters rising over seven feet in one house to trees falling on and ruining the roof on another, there was still much work to be done eight months after the hurricane.
The students worked at God's Katrina Kitchen one day. The kitchen opened right after the hurricane hit and is still serving over 1,000 people a day. All food is donated from people across the country. There is also a distribution center next to the kitchen that acts as a free store for the residents of the area. Donations in the distribution center range from clothing to food and other necessities. Residents are able to come gather necessary items once per week.
   After the middle school students

visited the Gulf Coast the first week, students came back wanting to send donations with the high school group. Within three days, thanks to the local community, Club Beyond collected well over $1,000 worth of supplies and necessities to take on the second mission trip. Most of these supplies were distributed to the residents within a day.
Because of the evacuation of these areas, there is an abundance of animals at the local animal shelter. One day the volunteers spent the afternoon walking and playing with the animals at the shelter.
The high school group made a trip down to New Orleans to view the devastation there and to also enjoy a little break eating Cajun food down in the French Quarter.
Most students look forward to spring break because they get to be lazy or go on a fun vacation. These Chattahoochee students discovered a joy and excitement in working ... something many of them had never experienced before.
The students who went were: Will Herlth, Ben Daniels, Patrick Basil, Jack Hill, Celeste DeJesus and Jyneessa MacPhail.
