Cusseta-Chattahoochee hires new Rec Director

By RICHARD HARRIS
(From the April 12, 2006 issue)
There’s a new face inside the Roscoe Robinson Sr. Activity Center these days, as Craig Potter has taken over the reigns as recreation director of Cusseta-Chattahoochee County.
Potter, 35, comes to Cusseta from Jonesboro, where he served as the youth sports coordinator for Clayton County’s large Parks & Recreation department. His duties included organizing field maintenance, drafting teams and ordering uniforms, as well as the day-to-day operations of the Little League baseball program and the youth football program. They fielded 24 baseball teams and 13 football teams.
He has been on the job in Cusseta for a little over a week now and is excited about the future of recreation in the growing area.
“A lot of growth is expected here in the next few years,” noted Potter. “Recreation is one of the first things people moving into an area – or businesses considering moving into an area – look at. They want to know what they can

do when they’re not working. My job is to provide them with good recreational opportunities. … My goal is to offer recreation programs and activities for all age groups.”
The Cusseta-Chattahoochee Recreation Department currently provides fields for Chattahoochee County Little League and has operated some basketball programs in the past. Potter said he hopes to help the department continue to have a good working relationship with the local Little League organization, and he hopes to expand upon the basketball program. He is also looking forward to the future establishment of Little League football – with a goal of being in action by June of 2007.

Potter said he also plans to have community activities and he is currently exploring options for what would be best for the Cusseta community.
The recreation center will also continue to be open during the day for pick-up basketball games, as well as for people to play pool (billiards) and use the exercise equipment.
Potter said he has been involved in sports his entire life and decided to seek a career in recreation because “if you do something you love you’ll never have to work.” He’s also been described by others as a “people person” so this is a vocation in which he can put those interaction skills to good use.
He is originally from Monticello. He earned the following from Georgia Southern College in Statesboro: master’s degree in recreation administration, bachelor of science degree in recreation, and a minor in business. He has also worked for the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks & Recreation Department and the Georgia Southern Campus Recreation and Intramural Department.
He and his wife, Maggie, reside in Columbus, where she works for the Tourism Division of the Georgia Economic Development Authority.
