to build a sewage treatment facility on land previously designated for that purpose is in the best interest of the county.
The local government declared a 332-acre parcel of land as surplus and sold it to a developer a little over a year ago, but kept an adjacent 125-acre tract and at that time planned to use a portion of it to build a sewage treatment facility to serve the homes that would be built in the development, as well as at least some of the existing homes in the Cusseta area.
However, a largely new group of commissioners is in office now, and it’s not yet certain if they will continue with those plans. In a meeting last week, they tabled making a decision on the funding of the proposed sewer project. The previous Commission had gone so far as voting to spend $735,000 for equipment for the proposed treatment plant, but a contract was never signed so the current Commission is not bound to it.
Sheriff’s Budget
Also in their recent meeting, commissioners passed an addendum to the 2007 fiscal year budget in order to transfer funds from the defunct police department to the Sheriff’s Office. The previous Commission had cut the budget for the Sheriff’s Office by about $300,000 when they voted to establish a new municipal police department, which was shut down shortly before the newest members of the current Commission took office in

January.
Other Items
In other items of business, the commissioners:
   * Voted to proceed with a USDA grant of $99,000 that would become part of a revolving loan (used initially to assist National Security Associates, and then other local business ventures).
   * Amended the employee travel policy to do away with the receipts requirement.
   * Voted to donate a salvage vehicle to the Chattahoochee County Board of Education.
   * Tabled a budgetary request from the Health Department.
