Three local high schools and a guest from across the Chattahoochee River competed in the first Chattahoochee County High School Christmas Tournament last weekend.
Marion County defeated Chattahoochee County for the girls’ championship, while the host Panthers defeated Russell County (Alabama) in the boys’ title game.
Girls Scores
In the first round on Friday evening, Dec. 29, Marion County defeated Russell County by a score of 47-40, while Chattahoochee County beat Schley County by a score of 52-30.
That set up a title match between Marion and Chattahoochee on Saturday. Marion’s Lady Eagles won by a score of 46-35 to win the trophy. In the consolation round, Russell County defeated Schley County (66-44) for third place.
Boys Scores
In the first round on the boys’ side, Russell County defeated Marion County by a score of 64-22), while Chattahoochee County beat Schley County by a score of 86-74.
Chattahoochee then met Russell in the championship game, with ‘ChattCo’ winning by a score of 73-51 to win the title. In the consolation round, Marion edged Schley in an exciting game (69-68) to claim third place.
“This was our first tournament here in Chattahoochee County in a long time (and the first at the high school level),” said CCHS Head Coach Jay Cox. “Thanks to all of the fans that came out to support our kids. Also, special thanks to Coach John McFather, Coach David Wells, Coach Brandy Conner, and Coach Jim McFather for coming out and participating in this event. I hope they all have a very successful season.”
‘ChattCo’ Recap
Panthers 86, Wildcats 74: The Chattahoochee County boys’ team opened the tournament with an 86-74 win over Schley County to advance to the championship game. They led 27-21 after the first quarter, but trailed Schley 38-41 at the half. They then outscored the Wildcats by four points in the third period and 11 points in the final quarter to claim victory.
Coach Jay Cox said his team had matured a lot in the recent tournament at Central of Talbotton, so he wasn’t worried about how they were playing, but he wasn’t sure if they could keep up with Schley County’s team.
“Niko Jones set the pace early, hitting three three-pointers in the first quarter,” noted Coach Cox. “No doubt that enabled us to score 27 first quarter points. Schley was able to pull ahead in the second quarter, as they continued to score while we couldn’t get it going. The third quarter found a different looking team on the floor for us. Six kids scored during the quarter and we were playing pretty good defense.”
A dozen different players scored for ‘ChattCo’ during the game. Four players hit double digits: Niko Jones (17), Octavius Staton (14), Jabril Renesca (12), and Kelvonte Jones (11). Other top scorers included Ulysses Jones (7), Jacovi White (7), and Dejaun Ross (6).
Staton also pulled down 10 rebounds, while Kelvonte Jones had 7 assists.
Panthers 73, Warriors 51: The Panthers then rolled to a 22-point victory (73-51) over Russell County in the title game on Saturday. They led at the end of all four periods: 16-14, 38-29, 56-39, 73-51.
“Having watched Russell County beat a very good Marion County team the previous day, caused some great concerns for me,” said Coach Cox. “I didn’t

know how we would respond. We have some great kids, but we do not have a senior class. Our kids are having to mature at a much faster rate than everybody else. Different kids keep stepping up at different time and points during the games to enable us to accomplish the mission. … But we have to get a little more consistent and play better defense if we are going to do anything in the region.”
The Panthers definitely spread the workload in the title game, with no player scoring more than 10 points, but the team still racking up a total of 73.
Kelvonte Jones led the team with 10 points. Others who scored included: Jacovi White (9), Niko Jones (9), Tacovi White (8), Dejaun Ross (7), Delandis Harris (7), Jabril Renesca (7), Octavius Staton (4), and Ulysses Jones (4).
Staton led the team with 10 rebounds, while Jacovi White helped spark the defense with 4 steals, and Kelvonte Jones had 7 assists.
Lady Panthers
Lady Panthers 52, Lady Cats 30: The ‘ChattCo’ girls defeated Schley County (52-30) in the first round to advance to the championship. They led 14-5 after the first period and dominated the game.
“Our girls continue to get better,” said Coach Cox. “I hope that we can keep this intensity at this level as we begin region play. The girls have been close several times this year. We really needed this win to boost our confidence.”
Courtney Fleming and Monique Reed led the way with 12 points each. Fleming also had 10 rebounds, while Reed sank four three-pointers.
Other players who scored were: Kristina Dixon (10), Ryan Rogers (5), Brandi Oatts (4), Sarah Welty (4), Kandace Harris (3), and Georgeeshia Embry (2). Rogers also led the team with 12 rebounds and 5 blocked shots.
Lady Panthers 35, Lady Eagles 46: Chattahoochee fell to Marion in the title game by a score of 35-46.
“Coach David Wells has the Marion County girls playing some pretty good ball,” said Coach Cox. “I’m glad that we were able to keep it close.”
Courtney Fleming led CCHS with 13 points, while Ryan Rogers had 7 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocked shots. Other players who scored were: Brandi Oatts (5), Georgeeshia Embry (4), Monique Reed (4), and Rachael Williford (2).
“Courtney is beginning to play at the level that we have expected her to play at,” Coach Cox said. “Her shot is beginning to drop and hopefully it will continue to do so against Stewart-Quitman this Friday night (when CCHS begins region play). Ryan Rogers and Brandi Oatts both had a great game. Both did an excellent job rebounding and blocking shots.”
