Can we preserve the American Way?

Today I see a rapid decaying of morals and behavior all across the spectrum of society. Our heritage of the Christian faith and beliefs is being rejected or isolated across the nation. More and more folks are missing the best that life can offer. If life is a one way trip from birth to death, with no way to live it over again, is it not a wise course to live an honorable and useful life? A day thrown away is gone forever. A life thrown away is a tragedy.
We inherited freedom and opportunity under a great Constitution and rule of law. Without question in my mind, this nation was given the best of human systems to promote the well being of people. Our forebears, diverse as they were, after long discussion and debate approved the system that endured through many upheavals, slavery, civil war, segregation, devastating depressions and disasters, and wars that caught us unprepared. Our divinely inspired system permitted us to regain and sustain a viable and favorable footing for people to live in freedom and opportunity.

Some founding fathers warned that our form of government requires a people of spiritual and principled bent. Integrity, honesty and sense of responsibility for others are needed in our elected and appointed officials. Parents should teach these virtues to their children. These qualities are becoming rarer in those we elect to office. Too many persons in political positions, who are sworn to protect and uphold the Constitution and our nation, are shallow, greedy and ideologically driven individuals. Too many citizens cast votes based on ideology or hopes of fulfilling selfish aims.
Consider the application of law. Judges make arbitrary decisions based on personal opinion or ideological agenda. Justice becomes more unjust and uneven in application. The Constitution is ignored and undermined, and more people come to distrust the judicial system and rebel against it. One underlying cause of the widespread and growing illegal drug trade and use is the profits made by some, and the corruption

of judges and other officials. Meanwhile millions of lives are ruined. To condone mass illegal immigration for selfish gain by companies is to ignore the rule of law while demanding citizens obey the law.
We vote the party ticket, disregarding the beliefs and actions of those we elect. As a guy said to me on a hiking path the other day, in polls most Americans say they believe in God but they don't vote by His standards and principles. Citizens who have benefited in our free society vote for law makers who constantly push for laws to register guns and want to ban gun ownership. Yet the Constitution and application of law from the beginning upholds the right of honest, law abiding citizens to own guns.
America is weakened and divided by the Supreme Court's decision to allow abortion on demand. The effect upon the spiritual realm of life among citizens is devastating. Abortion on a vast scale has undermined relationships between married couples and weakened churches. The birth rate of American citizens has fallen and led to a flood of legal immigrants, with perhaps 12 million illegal immigrants, to replace the loss of unborn babies.
Millions of newcomers arrive who believe in other religions, and many are totally dedicated to their beliefs. As millions of diverse religions and backgrounds come in, serious stresses arise in society. An overcrowded and inadequately prepared school system may not adequately teach the American way. English language and knowledge of the basic principles of American government and national traditions should be taught as a unifying measure to all newcomers.
I'm expressing fears at the decay and rot in our society and institutions that many people hold and do not express. I am not out to condemn anyone or culture, but the United States faces a continuing large inflow of immigrants of other cultures, religions and beliefs. With a society already in decay and arguing, a real war raging, all while our politicians struggle for power, what does our future hold?
People have always come to America to find individual liberty, political freedom and opportunity.  Now the question becomes, how do we maintain our freedom with the political system and economic opportunities that benefit all people? One of the greatest challenges in American history faces us today. Can our generation rise to greatness, as did our forebears in the WW II era?
